BLOSSOM provides opportunities for workshops, performances, or simply a space to rest, ensuring a sustainable support system where mothers can be themselves.

BLOSSOM helps teen mums write, connect, and share their words through group discussions, spoken word, song-writing and poetry…

There is a significant stigma attached to being a “teen mum” in today’s society. Young mothers are often overlooked and disregarded, as many baby and toddler groups cater to middle-class white mums, thereby ostracising young mums, particularly those from black and other ethnic groups. Many young mums face judgment and mistreatment, with their experiences often disregarded and their needs unmet. The absence of projects like BLOSSOM prevents these mothers from meeting, conversing, creating, and receiving the support they need.

There are opportunities to set goals, work on self-care techniques and write affirmations in the sessions. We are always actively seeking support from other services, brands and businesses to provide discounts and donations. Health and well-being practitioners are also invited to offer advice on wellness, childcare and postnatal practices.

Lewisham has one of the highest rates of teenage pregnancy in London, with approximately 30.6 conceptions per 1,000 girls aged 15-17, compared to the national average of 18.8. The borough’s teenage pregnancy rates are among the highest in Europe. Moreover, mental health issues are prevalent among young people, with reports indicating that nearly 1 in 5 (19%) young people aged 16-24 experience mental health problems. This crisis is exacerbated by factors such as socioeconomic status and lack of support.
